MISSION STATEMENT
AustinPCOS was organized in the summer of 2000 and formed an official nonprofit corporation in 2002. Our goals are to:
Provide a central resource for women in Texas, and specifically in the city of Austin, regarding the condition known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by making available general information about PCOS, its treatment, and long-term effects;
Educate women who have been isolated by this condition and are unaware of its full implications by providing an informative website, facilitating communication with other women via our online support forum, maintaining a lending library containing books and other material of interest, hosting discussion groups and educational programs, and creating opportunities for social interaction;
Support research on medical protocols to understand and treat both the cause of PCOS and its associated symptoms. This will be accomplished by 1) promotion of funding for research on PCOS treatment, and 2) facilitation of volunteers for research projects from among the constituency;
Assist physicians and other healthcare professionals to recognize and more fully understand PCOS and the nature of its treatment, and in particular, to promote awareness of the frequently overlooked health risks associated with PCOS, such as diabetes, heart disease, and reproductive cancers by providing informative literature, by making personal contact with individual physicians and healthcare providers, and by displaying at physician continuing education conferences whenever possible;
Educate the general public about the etiology and complications of PCOS by hosting monthly meetings featuring guest speakers from the community to present on various PCOS-related topics;
Publish a periodic electronic newsletter containing articles that are informative of polycystic ovary syndrome and related health issues;
Sponsor seminars and workshops open to the general public where ideas, opinions and writings relating to women's health issues and health concerns, especially polycystic ovary syndrome, may be expressed and shared with others; and
Engage in other activities related to educating the general public concerning polycystic ovary syndrome and related health concerns.
As of January 2, 2003, we are pleased to announce that the IRS has designated our organization as a 501(c)(3) public charity! That means donations made to our organization are tax deductible. At this time, we are solely supported by private donations, and we do not receive funds from government entities, pharmaceutical companies, or national associations. We are operated exclusively by the volunteer efforts of local women with PCOS. If you would like to volunteer with AustinPCOS, please email Victoria Kogan at vkogan@austinpcos.org.
